Patent documents are public documents; most intellectual property offices across the world make it possible for the public to access patent databases. Some national and regional intellectual property offices have created free online patent databases. Furthermore, some private companies provide complicated databases for a cost. Intellectual property agents are usually trained to research patent documents, and other businesses usually use their services to search for needed information.

A number of private companies also charge a fee for database lookup services.
